Religion plays an important role in the mankind society. In the earlier periods, the Taokas people of the Pingpu tribe dwelled at Jiajhihshih and Maolishih in Miaoli City. Originally they prayed to their ancestral spirits or wizards, and believed on the art of voodoos. Later, although the introduction of Christianity had once changed their religious belief, under strong influence of the Han people's culture, most of them still believe in and pray to customary god idols. As a whole, the god idols that people believe in the Miaoli area are mostly a blend of the Confucius, Buddhism, Taoism and other customary beliefs. It reflects the harmonious tolerance among different cultures here.

The introduction of Christianity and Catholicism was relatively late. History recorded that the high priests of Christianity and churches only began their evangelical preaching in Miaoli when Rev. George Leslie Mackay first came to Miaoli during the reign of Guangsiyu in the Ching Dynasty. Other churches had been introduced here continuously since the 1950's. They had once enjoyed a period of grandeur. Currently, there remains quite substantial amount of churches and related religious activities here.
